Sacred Window
the ancient Ayurvedic art of
holding the Mama
Ayurvedic Postpartum
It is said the first 42 days of your postpartum healing sets you up for the next 42 years of your life. Honouring your sacred postpartum window ensures you are rejuvenated, vibrant and luminescent to care for and guide your new child and generations to come.
The concept of Sutika Paricharya (Ayurvedic postpartum care), arises from ancient Vedic teachings in that the seven tissue layers - sapta dhatu, are completely depleted followoing the epic marathon of birth and take roughly 6 weeks to fully nourish and rejuvenate back to optimal health.
We follow 4 pillars of rejuvenating care, whereby the newborn Mama is nourished, supported and upheld in the most loving and revered way, by those she holds dearest - her family..her village. I provide this 1:1 postpartum support for you in your birth space, or, educate and empower your team to do this for you. My aim is to illuminate the need for this ancient knowledge to be common place, in each and every birthing Mama's home.
The concept of 'Doula' or Dais is common in Ayurveda and dates back as far as the Vedas document. I hope to educate you with this ancient wisdom, for you to then share with your sister, your sister-in-law, your friend, your beautiful daughter - so YOU are her support. The place of Doula is such an honoured position and what I have shared with my own daughter, and with so many women - I hope we all get to experience. Eventually, returning to this ancient healing knowledge to empower every sister in birth.
Abhyanga
Sutika abhyanga is a warm oil massage therapy used in
postpartum healing and as the basis of rejuvenating care. It is considered one of the four main treatment tools in healing
newborn Mamas, post birth.
Warm medicated oils are applied to the whole body, with firm yet gentle pressure to pacify and ground Vayu dosha. Typically, this is followed by steam bath therapy to allow the excess doshas to exit nearest channel - the skin.
Also assisting to regulate an exhausted nervous system and improve sleep quality (when Mama does actually get sleep) abhyanga and steam bath therapy are recommended daily, for the first 6 weeks post birth.
I offer mobile/in house abhyanga + steam bath therapy sessions to newborn Mamas in their first 6 weeks postpartum. Purchase a single session, or package sessions are available for purchase.
Udara Veshtana
-Ayurvedic Belly Binding
The term Udara Veshtana - udara (meaning abdomen) and veshtana (meaning wrapping cloth), is the ancient Ayurvedic healing method whereby a muslin cloth is wrapped tightly around the abdomen post-birth, to assist in regaining strength and structure to the abdominal core.
Belly wrapping post-birth utilises the hormone relaxin still
present, to nurture and nourish your pelvic cradle & cavity, ligaments and organs (uterus and intestines) back into place, whilst supporting and holding your womb as she gently retracts - nurturing her back to her pre-birth state.
Following abhyanga, we apply warm medicated oil and pastes, then bind your abdomen in roughly 15m of muslin.
This treatment usually starts 4 to 6 days after a normal vaginal delivery and 7 to 10 days after a C-section.
Newborn Abhyanga
Nurturing, strengthening and immunity boosting.
Ayurvedic Baby Massage is a beautiful practice to build tissue strength, cognitive awareness and loving bond between baby and Mama.
Massaging babies from week 1 with strengthening and nourishing herbal oils before their bath, helps to ease wind and indigestion by moving trapped air to expel easily definitely reducing incidence of colic, constipation and sore tummies. Most importantly it promotes sound sleep by allowing baby to completely relax before bedtime.
In home education sessions are available to new Mamas in their postpartum period - I bring everything to you. Or, you are welcome to visit my clinic for a 1:1 Baby Massage Education session..
Kati Basti Therapy
Kati basti treatment is an essential postpartum healing therapy to pacify and nourish apana vayu. It involves pooling of warm medicated oil in a dough-dam over the lower lumbar region in a series of treatments, to deeply nourish muscle tissue, ligaments, organs and systems. This warm oil treatment also increases blood flow to help the healing process.
This warm oil treatment works directly on the womb and cervical tissue to replenish and restore strength. Oil is always pooled over the lower lumbar region, never pooled directly over the womb space - as this is too heating and causes further imbalance, aggravation and inflammation to the delicate healing womb tissue and surrounding organs.
Lotus Birth
Placenta Preservation
A Lotus birth is where the umbilical cord remains intact and your baby remains connected to the placenta until the unclamped umbilical cord naturally dries and detaches by itself, usually between 3 - 5 days after birth.
Lotus birth originates in ancient scriptures and its benefits are said to boost blood circulation in baby and allow for the complete transfer of all red blood cells and stem cells, iron and nutrients present in the placenta at birth.
A Lotus Birth also provides energetic protection over baby, as the placenta's soul determines when the baby is fully ground in to this earthly realm, and when the time is right to detach.
During this process, the placenta is at risk of degenerating, so correct sanitation and preservation methods are recommended to ensure the health and safety of your baby during this process.
I will guide you on preserving your placenta during this sacred time of gentle grounding in for your babe, providing an education session and preservation kits to empower you in this space.
Placenta Honouring
The placenta or 'Apara' in Ayurveda is considered a sacred organ and vessel of life that nourishes and protects your baby in the womb. It is formed initially by rakta dhatu within Artavavaha srotas, and is said to have it's own soul.
It is formed with the purest purpose to nourish and protect your baby as she grows and is delivered safely. Honouring this sacred organ following birth, also ensures the energetic protection of your baby throughout this life.
I aim to help you fully honour this sacred organ with reverence and wonderment, following baby's birth. I provide education and reverence through the form of art and keepsakes, ceremonial burial and ritual honouring.
I will collect your precious placenta in the following 24 hours after birth to create treasured art or keepsakes you choose, or can provide guidance on how to perform this sacred honouring yourself, in your own home and in your own time.
Perineum Healing
Vaginal tears do occasionally occur during childbirth. Either perineal lacerations (tears) or episiotomy incisions, these are the painful separation of tissue to allow room for baby to be delivered.
Healing your Yoni post birth is determined by the degree of tearing and surgical sutures present. Each case is assessed differently to ensure the fastest and most comfortable method of healing for you.
Methods I use to heal perineum tissue include:
- Yoni Dhupana (steam) with medicated smoke or steam
- Topical application of tailam (oils) or kwatha (decoctions)
- Herbal Sitz Bathing
- Sitz Misting Spray
Education (pdf guide) and herbal provisions are provided.
