Basti is a common term in Ayurveda, well known as a ‘container’. When we talk about Basti in terms of birth preparation - it is the bowel that ‘holds’ the oil, hence basti is an oil enema more specifically, matrabasti or anuvasana basti.
It’s the process of internal oleation and pacifying/nourishing apana VAYU dosha in preparation for birth.
Kit includes; nelaton catheter, 60ml syringe, oils – Ayurvedic tailam.
OIL: ghee or organic black sesame. Herbal oils can be used as advised by Ayu Practitioner - who will assess the condition of VAYU dosha before any herbal recommendations.
PROCESS: commenced from week 36 ~ 42 weeks. Again depending on condition of VAYU dosha. When in balance, the normal flow of Apana Vata – the vayu that governs umbilicus and below, so all movement/physical function below the navel - nourishes the ligaments and tissues, and promotes circulation and oleation or, softening of the tissues.
Herbal oils do have a stronger effect on the body and can initiate labour, so caution with these and always consult a practitioner before use.
